I have just joined QEII Centre as an account manager – working with clients across the association, agency and corporate sectors. I’ve joined from UBM, where I was an account manager for International Confex – their long standing International MICE industry trade show. My role was to look after the ‘UK and International Destinations and Venues’ sector which gave me a really sound grounding in the events industry. My role was focused on dealing with venues and destinations so I quickly learnt to understand their challenges and opportunities. Having a background in the MICE industry holds me in really good stead to work with our clients and will help ensure that I understand their frustrations and challenges. The role also helped me to fine tune my organisational and sales skills too.
When I first became a member of team QE2, I was struck by how welcoming everyone was. I think my biggest challenge will be that I’m now simultaneously looking after many, many events whilst in my previous role I was used to spending 365 days preparing for one event; the pace is very different! But it is great to be working with a tangible product – to be able to show clients around a real space (rather than exhibition space which is only ‘real’ for three days of the year).
I’m impressed with in house facilities at the Centre; I’ve already spent a day with Leith’s, our in-house caterers, which was a real eye opener. I worked hands on to get a behind the scenes view and experienced just how professional they all are. The team had only 45 minutes to turn round a room from a coffee break and exhibition space to a beautiful space for a sit down lunch for over 400 people. I have to admit that I did have my doubts that we would be able to do it in time, but I’m pleased to say that they proved me wrong. I will never forget the expression on the delegates’ faces when they walked into the totally transformed room. I’ll also be spending a day with AV team to find out more about the important role they have in creating the successful events held at the Centre.
My overriding impression of my role so far is one of team work – of the entire team working together to help our clients create amazing events. I can safely say that I’m going to very much enjoy being part of Team QE2.
