Bold Foundation Behind the Scenes: Daring to Deliver Excellence Every Day

Bold Foundation Behind the Scenes: Daring to Deliver Excellence Every Day

At the QEII Centre, our Dare to be Bold campaign celebrates the creativity and ambition of our clients. But bold events don’t just happen — they’re built on the dedication of the people working tirelessly behind the scenes to make everything run seamlessly.

Among these unsung heroes are our porters, whose hard work and flexibility ensure that every event is set up, delivered, and broken down with precision. From heavy lifting to quick problem-solving, their role is essential in creating an environment where bold ideas can come to life.

We caught up with Porter Supervisor Antonio Alves to hear more about the porters’ day-to-day responsibilities, the challenges they face, and how they help create memorable experiences for clients and guests.

What does a typical day look like for you at the QEII Centre?

“A typical day starts with a morning briefing, where we discuss the events scheduled for the day and any special requirements. My tasks often involve checking inventory, preparing equipment, and ensuring the venue is ready for guests. Throughout the day, I remain flexible, responding to the needs of different teams and assisting wherever necessary.”

What kinds of tasks are you usually responsible for during an event?

“During an event, I handle a variety of tasks including transporting equipment and supplies, setting up furniture and staging areas, and assisting guests with their needs. I also help ensure that the venue remains clean and organised throughout the event.”

How do you support event setup and breakdown?

“For setup, I coordinate with event managers to understand the layout and requirements, then assist in arranging furniture, setting up audiovisual equipment, and ensuring all materials are in place. After the event, I help with the breakdown, which involves dismantling setups, packing away equipment, and cleaning the space to prepare for the next event.”

What’s the most physically demanding or logistically complex part of your job?

“The most physically demanding part is often the setup for large events, where we may need to move heavy furniture or equipment quickly. Logistically, coordinating the timing of various setups while ensuring everything is in the right place for different events can be complex, especially when multiple functions occur on the same day.”

How do you coordinate with other teams (AV, catering, cleaning, etc.)?

“Coordination with other teams is crucial. I communicate regularly with the AV team to ensure their equipment is ready and positioned correctly. With catering, I coordinate timing for food service and setup. I also work closely with the cleaning team to maintain a tidy environment throughout the event.”

How do you and your team help create bold, memorable experiences for clients and guests?

“We focus on the details that enhance the guest experience, from ensuring the venue is visually appealing to providing prompt assistance. By working collaboratively and being attentive to the needs of both clients and guests, we create an environment that feels welcoming and professional, leaving a lasting impression.”

Building Bold Experiences Together

From the quiet efficiency of setup to the coordinated teamwork during live events, the porters are at the heart of every success story at the QEII Centre. Their hard work ensures that our spaces are ready to host bold ideas, big moments, and unforgettable experiences.

Theirs is a role that might not always be in the spotlight, but without their commitment and expertise, the events our clients imagine simply wouldn’t be possible.
